Latin America is becoming increasingly important to international law firms. With the region’s economies outpacing those of the United States and Europe, many foreign law firms are reporting strong growth in Latin American markets, especially Brazil.

The editorial staff of Latin Business Chronicle has taken a closer look at some of the leading attorneys from international law firms that are involved in the growing legal boom in Latin America.

Our list of the top 30 includes attorneys from both large and smaller boutique firms based in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. Their expertise spans a broad range of subjects, including arbitration, banking, capital markets, energy, mining, M&A’s and taxes.

We included the attorneys based on a number of criteria, including involvement in recent prominent deals and transactions in Latin America, prominence on Latin America within their law firm, importance of their law firm in Latin America and rankings by third parties such as UK-based Chambers and Partners.

Included on the list is Michael Diaz Jr., Managing Partner of Diaz, Reus & Targ, headquartered in Miami, Florida. The Chronicle reports:

Michael Diaz, Jr. has been involved in several high-profile cases in Latin America. In one case, Diaz and his firm are representing a Venezuelan client that is claiming a $5 million reward from the Peruvian government for the 2000 capture in Venezuela of Vladimiro Montesinos, who was wanted on charges of drug dealing, money laundering, arms trafficking, extortion and murder. Peru has refused to pay the reward.

Diaz was more successful in getting a New York federal court earlier this month to dismiss a RICO lawsuit against one of its clients. He also represented clients that in May successfully got a U.S. judge to freeze $2.43 billion of Argentine assets in the United States. Apart from the high-profile litigation work, Diaz and his firm have been active in advising firms on Asia-Latin America business and Middle East-Latin America business.
